Urine test can spot more than nine in 10 bladder cancers
- An NHS trial of the new GALEAS Bladder urine test identified more than nine in 10 bladder cancer cases, with the non-invasive test evaluated on 964 patients across seven NHS urology departments.
- Most patients currently require an invasive cystoscopy, which involves inserting a camera into the bladder; with more than 300,000 cystoscopies performed annually, the procedure creates significant waiting lists.
- Published in European Urology Oncology, the study found GALEAS Bladder detected 71 of 77 cancers, or 92.2%, while a negative result indicated a 99% chance the patient did not have cancer by screening for 450 DNA mutations.
- Using GALEAS Bladder to triage patients could result in 730 fewer urgent cystoscopies for every 1,000 patients, results Professor Richard Bryan, Director of the Bladder Cancer Research Centre, called "very promising early performance."
- While GALEAS Bladder is already used within NHS pathways in England and Wales, Michelle Mitchell from CRUK noted that further research is needed to ensure faster, less invasive diagnostic methods.
