Urgent bin collection rule change during heatwave
Councils are starting collections earlier to protect crews and keep services running as temperatures could reach 40 degrees, the UK Health Security Agency said.
Starting Tuesday, June 23, multiple councils including Colchester City Council and authorities across Hampshire have shifted bin collection start times to 6am or earlier to protect crews from extreme heat.
The Met Office issued red and amber heat-health alerts, warning of an "exceptional spell of hot and humid weather" with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 40 degrees by Thursday.
Residents in districts like Horsham and Eastbourne must place bins at the kerbside by 6am, or even 5am, to allow crews to complete rounds before the day's peak temperatures.
Officials warn the heat may impact collection speeds, with potential disruptions to transport and water supplies as the UK Health Security Agency flagged risks of "serious illness or danger to life."
Forecasters expressed "growing confidence" this week could break the 1976 record of 35.6C, as these conditions, forecast to feel "muggier" than last month's heatwave, persist through Thursday.
