UPI in Sri Lanka: NPCI International Steps up Efforts to Boost Payments for Indian Tourists

NPCI International and LankaPay enable instant UPI payments at major Sri Lankan merchants for over 530,000 Indian tourists in 2025, reducing cash and forex use.

  • On March 17, NPCI International Payments Limited strengthened UPI merchant acceptance in Sri Lanka, enabling Indian tourists to pay by scanning LankaQR codes with UPI apps, reducing cash reliance.
  • Built as a real-time mobile system, UPI processes over 20 billion transactions monthly and is accepted in France, Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Qatar.
  • NIPL says deployments already cover Cinnamon Hotels, Taj Hotels, Barista, Keells Supermarket and Odel, with Ritesh Shukla, MD & CEO, NPCI International, saying it's 'transformative' to expand digital payments.
  • For travellers and merchants, the NIPL release highlighted real-time payments, transparent exchange rates, and improved cash management supporting Sri Lanka’s digital economy.
  • NIPL plans to continue working with Sri Lankan regulators, banks and merchants to expand UPI acceptance, while Congress MP Shashi Tharoor says UPI’s spread to 19 countries positions India as a techno-diplomatic leader.
