Indian travelers can now make instant UPI merchant payments in Uzbekistan after NIPL partnered with the country’s national payment system, officials said.
- On Monday, August 31, 2026, NPCI International Payments Limited announced a partnership with Uzbekistan's National Interbank Processing Centre enabling Unified Payments Interface merchant payments across Uzbekistan via the UZQR code.
- The agreement, signed Sunday, August 30, 2026, followed formal approvals from the Reserve Bank of India and the Central Bank of Uzbekistan , which designated HUMO as the authorized partner for cross-border merchant acceptance.
- Indian tourists, business travellers, and students gain ability to make direct person-to-merchant payments from their bank accounts, bypassing foreign exchange markups and reducing dependence on international cards or cash during visits.
- Expanding UPI's global footprint, the Ministry of Finance stated, "Partnership between NIPL and Uzbekistan's National payment system marks a significant step in expanding UPI's international footprint," as the system now operates in 10 countries.
