‘No Significant Growth’: Wildfire Between Kamloops and Merritt Held, Still 149 Hectares
B.C. Wildfire Service says 55 firefighters and aerial resources are responding as the suspected cause remains under investigation.
The Kullagh Creek wildfire, located near Stump Lake along Highway 5A south of Kamloops, remains at 149 hectares as of Wednesday morning, characterized as a smouldering Rank 1 fire.
Responding to the fire on Tuesday, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District enacted a state of local emergency and issued an evacuation order for 8805 Kullagh Lake Road, alongside alerts for 30 properties.
On Wednesday, 61 firefighting personnel are actively tackling the situation, supported by five helicopters and deployed heavy equipment, following overnight progress by crews.
Shae Stearns, fire information officer at the Kamloops Fire Centre, encourages the public to download the BCWS mobile app to report wildfires, noting that photos help determine resource assessments.
The TNRD Emergency Operations Centre remains in coordination with the BCWS, as crews continue patrolling and mopping up the site following minimal overnight growth and containment.
