Residents Suppress Wildfire Near Chilliwack Lake
Crews reported the fire at 0.5 hectares and had it about 70% contained within an hour, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Hall and BC Wildfire Service responded to a wildfire near Chilliwack Lake after crews were paged at about 5 p.m. to a location 5 km up a forest service road from the Riverside Campground Site.
- Residents from Post Creek, including Derrick Kramer, arrived first at the fire site and attempted to suppress the flames before professional firefighters arrived on scene. Their quick action helped contain the wildfire in its early stages.
- Firefighters arriving at 5:40 p.m. reported the fire was about 500 feet by 500 feet, located near the Nesakwatch and Centre Creek Forest Service roads. The River Valley hall's Squad 1 vehicle, designed for forest service roads, responded to the incident.
- By 6:15 p.m., crews achieved about 70 per cent containment and established a command centre. The BC Wildfire Service listed the incident as under control at.5 hectares on their official wildfire map.
- The collaborative response between the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Hall and BC Wildfire Service demonstrated effective coordination between local and provincial resources in managing the incident. Resident intervention during initial stages proved critical to preventing further spread.
