Argentina's Milei addresses UN as tensions rise over Falkland Islands

- Argentina earlier this month initiated sanctions against more than 60 companies and people linked to offshore oil drilling, while Milei recently presented a bill to toughen penalties for natural resource activities.
- On Friday, British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Overseas Territories Uma Kumaran called the actions "unacceptable," saying "the Falkland Islands are British and they have the right to develop their natural resources as they see fit."
- Despite the sanctions, Sea Lion project owners Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration do not expect Milei's actions to derail development. Peronist opposition congressman Guillermo Michel alleged the move is "simply something to look good in the eyes of society or to try to shift the agenda."
- On Thursday, Milei is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. US President Donald Trump suggested Washington could reconsider its traditionally neutral position on the Falklands sovereignty dispute.
