Burrows Sets Out 'Stronger Together' Vision as He Calls on People to 'Come Home' to Unionism and the UUP
Burrows said unionists must reconnect with voters, grow turnout and focus Stormont on housing and other local issues.
- Ahead of his first UUP conference as leader, Jon Burrows outlined a 'Stronger Together' vision for Northern Ireland, urging unionists to boost voter turnout and backing significant reforms to remove vetoes within the Stormont Assembly.
- Burrows argues the current system is inefficient, pushing to end one-party vetoes over the Executive. However, DUP leader Gavin Robinson opposes these changes, asserting the 1998 political settlement and St Andrews deal remain 'a pillar that I don't think can be removed.'
- To attract young voters, Burrows proposed a 'First Home Deposit Bond' redirecting £7,500 of National Insurance contributions toward housing, alongside plans for scrapping 'artificial' university caps. He insists these policies are 'practical, deliverable and exactly the kind of policy that provides the first financial step into adulthood.'
- Despite recent internal turbulence, including the resignation of former leader Doug Beattie and tension with Mike Nesbitt over hospital services, Burrows insists his party is now more united than ever and 'has a job of work to do.'
- Burrows also expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the Drumcree parade dispute, the first such effort in almost 30 years, as he aims to expand the UUP's appeal and reverse declining unionist turnout.

Burrows: Unionism must grow the vote, not just manage it
Jon Burrows is the Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party Unionism cannot secure its future by becoming better at managing the vote we already have. We must be smarter at elections, certainly.
