In August 2026, the unemployment rate of women (6.3%) exceeded that of men (5.2%), while the rate of adult unemployment stood at 4.8% and the rate of youth unemployment at 19.8%.
Regarding the underutilization rate of the work in August, the INE states that it was estimated at 9.7%, minus 0.4 percentage points as in the same month of 2025 and more than 0.1 percentage points as in July.
Excluding the post-pandemian period, the current deviation from the NAIRU level (non-accelerating rate of inflation) is compared only with what was seen in 2009 following the international financial crisis.
The unemployment rate remained at 5.7% in August, according to the INE's provisional estimates, with variations from the previous months.
