North Carolina and NC State Are Set to Play a Nonconference Game in Greensboro
The nonconference matchup will revive the rivalry at a neutral site, with organizers saying no tax dollars are directly tied to the event.
On Wednesday, UNC and N.C. State announced they will meet for a nonconference men's basketball game in Greensboro on Dec. 15, creating the neutral-site Tobacco Road Classic.
The Atlantic Coast Conference reduced its conference slate from 20 to 18 games, eliminating home-and-home guarantees and reducing a rivalry dating to 1919 to a single game last year.
Hosting the event at First Horizon Coliseum, formerly the Greensboro Coliseum, links the game to the Big Four Tournament held from 1970 to 1981, which Richard Beard, president of the Greensboro Sports Foundation, described as central to 'Tournament Town.'
Sponsoring the event, Thomasville-headquartered Old Dominion Freight Line ensures no direct tax dollars are involved, while Scott Johnson, general manager of First Horizon Coliseum, lauded the return of this historic matchup.
Both programs hold deep NCAA Tournament history, with national championships won by Carolina in 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005 and 2009, and by State in 1974 and 1983; fans now experience this rivalry in regular-season play.
