UN says Ebola epidemic still huge and growing

- Government figures published on Tuesday indicate 7,258 confirmed cases and 3,510 deaths across seven provinces, with 10 of the 62 affected health zones recording no new Ebola cases for more than 22 days.
- Julien Harneis, the U.N. special Ebola coordinator, told a Geneva press briefing that despite progress, "in other areas, we continue to see growth in cases," calling it a "deadly and a massive epidemic."
- World Health Organization official Olivier le Polain cautioned it is "too early to confidently say we have passed a peak," noting this outbreak is the second most lethal on record behind only the West Africa epidemic.

The Ebola epidemic in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is progressing "exponentially" in North Kivu, while there are signs of improvement in other provinces, said the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday, 15 September, and another challenge for health personnel, which is not necessarily welcome in the areas in question.
The number of deaths per week has almost doubled in North Kivu, while transmission has slowed in other regions. The institution counts 3,475 deaths out of 7,200 confirmed cases.
