UN Assembly tells Russia to return captive Ukrainian kids
The UN General Assembly resolution, supported by 91 countries, calls on Russia to halt deportations and ensure rehabilitation and reintegration of at least 20,000 Ukrainian children taken since 2014.
- On Dec 3, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding Russia ensure the immediate, safe and unconditional return of all forcibly transferred Ukrainian children, approved by 91 votes to 12 with 57 abstentions.
- Citing separations since 2014 and the Feb 2022 invasion, officials say Ukraine reports at least 20,000 children deported to Russia, with about 1,850 returned.
- The resolution asks the UN Secretary‑General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict to coordinate monitoring, citing violations of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and urging Moscow to cease forcible transfers and indoctrination.
- Moscow rejected the measure and urged states to oppose it, with Maria Zabolotskaya saying, `Each vote for the resolution is support for lies, war and confrontation. Every vote against is a vote for peace.`
- Although non‑binding, the resolution positions the Assembly to reconvene as needed, while the International Criminal Court's March 2023 arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin adds legal pressure and U.S. envoys met Putin before the vote.
