ULS Says Kenyan Lawyer Martha Karua Denied Entry to Uganda Ahead of Lukwago Bail Ruling
Ugandan immigration officials blocked Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua from entering, while 2 members of her legal delegation were cleared, the Uganda Law Society said.
- On Monday, Ugandan authorities denied entry to Senior Counsel Martha Karua at Entebbe International Airport as she arrived to join the legal team representing former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
- The incident occurred shortly before the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court convened for Lukwago's bail ruling; he was remanded to Luzira Prison last week for allegedly failing to disclose information regarding an alleged treasonous plot involving Dr. Kizza Besigye.
- Law Society President Charles Kanjama was admitted while immigration officials barred Karua without explanation; Kanjama said it was "of particular concern" that she traveled "for the same matter and in the same professional capacity" as himself.
- ULS Deputy President Antony Asiimwe confirmed officials provided no justification for the deportation, stating that while two team members were permitted entry, authorities simply told Karua she could not enter Uganda.
- Representing opposition leader Tundu Lissu, Karua previously faced deportation from Tanzania last year, while the ongoing treason case against Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale continues to spark intense regional debate over legal jurisdiction and human rights.
