1,000 Years Of War And Renewal: Kyiv's Monastery Of The Caves
Ukrainian officials say Russian drones and missiles damaged the nearly 1,000-year-old monastery complex, which has faced repeated attacks across its history.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian drones "deliberately targeted" the Kyiv area, causing damage to the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery during a massive barrage.
Founded in the 11th century, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra overlooks the Dnieper River and has survived sacking by Cuman raiders, Mongolian, and Golden Horde invaders across its nearly 1,000-year history.
Tensions escalated after police raided the monastery in 2022 when a video surfaced showing worshippers singing "The ringing floats, floats over Russia, Mother Russia is awakening." Kyiv authorities have accused the UOC of maintaining links to Russia.
The site endured execution of a Metropolitan by pro-Bolshevik militants in 1918 during the Ukrainian-Soviet war, and the Dormition Cathedral was destroyed during the Nazi-led occupation of Kyiv in 1941.
Russia denies targeting the monastery, claiming damage resulted from Ukrainian air defenses without providing evidence. Archimandrite Avraamiy, a vicar at the Lavra, described the strike as feeling "like an enemy bullet had hit you straight in the heart.
