Ukraine Updates: Kyiv Receives Patriot System From Israel
Ukraine has integrated the US-made Patriot system transferred from Israel into its multi-layered air defence, with European allies funding and replenishing Western-supplied weapons stocks.
- On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine received a US-made Patriot air defence system from Israel, which has been operating for a month.
- Under a July agreement, several European countries committed to sending US-made weapons from existing stockpiles and pledged to replenish them, with European allies covering the costs.
- Ukraine is assembling a layered air-defence shield combining Germany’s IRIS-T and Gepard systems and France and Italy’s SAMP/T, while the Netherlands announced a €500 million package including Patriot parts.
- Kyiv expects two more Patriot launchers this autumn, a move seen as somewhat surprising amid Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's earlier cautious stance toward Russia.
- Diplomatic context includes past UN votes and shifting ties with Iran as Israel has supported some UN resolutions against occupation while Netanyahu's government recently distanced itself from Moscow.
