Ukraine races to counter Russia's jet-powered drone attacks

Ukraine says a newly tested interceptor destroyed one Russian jet-powered drone as more than 60 domestic companies race to build cheaper defenses.

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed testing is accelerating for new interceptor drones to counter Russian jet-powered Shaheds after discussing financial backing with Defence Minister Yevhen Khmara and Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi.
  • Russia has escalated its campaign, increasing use of jet-powered drones roughly sixfold this summer as monthly launches surged from around 450 in June to about 2,850 in August.
  • While Ukraine previously achieved around 90% interception rates against slower Shahed-type UAVs, new jet models fly at speeds exceeding 400 kilometres per hour, causing test interceptors to crash during trials.
  • On Friday, a senior commander noted Kyiv is lagging in the initiative; Anatoliy Khrapchynskyi of Fly Group Ukraine advocated for a networked approach where devices operate as a single "organism."
  • Yuriy Cherevashenko, deputy commander of Ukraine's air force, acknowledged development difficulties but stated Ukraine is close to fielding mass-produced, low-cost solutions effective at countering jet-powered UAVs.
