UK home secretary to restart resettlement program prioritizing Palestinian refugees: Report
The programme will begin with hundreds of places and later expand through community, student and work routes, ministers said.
- On Sunday, the Guardian reported that British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce the reopening of the UK Resettlement Scheme, prioritizing Palestinian refugees and Afghan women after the program stopped accepting new referrals in December 2024.
- The Government intends the scheme to provide a managed alternative to irregular journeys, forming part of a wider expansion of safe and legal pathways. This addresses Channel crossings while maintaining numerical limits.
- Around one in four admissions will consist of Palestinians and Afghans identified through the UNHCR and the International Refugee Assistance Project. Admitted refugees will begin a five-year route to permanent settlement.
- Speaking at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Mahmood told delegates that safe and legal routes must be 'capped and controlled,' arguing the UK can meet humanitarian obligations while maintaining strict limits on admissions.
- Migration experts and the Refugee Council have questioned whether the initial scale is sufficient to reduce irregular Channel crossings. Madeleine Sumption of the Migration Observatory noted the scheme's impact depends largely on the total number of refugees admitted.
