UK retailers raise prices by most since 2024, BRC data shows
Food inflation rose to 2.8% and non-food prices to 0.9% as higher energy and AI-driven costs fed through, the BRC said.
- On Tuesday, the British Retail Consortium reported shop price inflation reached an annual 1.5% in August, rising from 0.9% in July to hit its highest level in two years.
- Higher energy, input, and commodity costs, coupled with the end of summer promotions, pushed prices higher, according to Mike Watkins, head of retailer and business insight at NIQ.
- Food price inflation rose to 2.8% in August from 2.2% in July, while Chief Executive Helen Dickinson said non-food inflation climbed to 0.9% as the AI boom forced up electronics costs.
- Consumer price inflation measured by the Office for National Statistics reached a four-month high of 2.9% in July, covering a broader range of goods than the retail index.
- The Bank of England forecasts the Consumer Price Index will peak at 3.2% in October and November, with food price inflation reaching 3.5% in December.
