Ugandan soccer star dies after assault in capital
Police said the SC Villa captain was attacked while resisting a robbery, and lawmakers called for stronger action after violent crime in Kampala.
SC Villa captain David Owori has died at Case Clinic following injuries sustained in an attack by suspected thugs. The 27-year-old was receiving treatment for his injuries when he passed away.
Owori previously played for Vipers and clubs in Spanish and Swedish leagues before returning to Villa in 2023. He helped the club secure the 2024 Uganda Premier League title, ending a 20-year championship wait.
The 27-year-old reportedly suffered serious injuries while resisting an attempt to steal his phone and valuables. His death has triggered widespread grief across Uganda among teammates, fans, and political leaders.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the attackers. SC Villa described him as "a leader, brother and friend," while the Federation of Uganda Football Associations praised his influence on and off the pitch.
This killing has renewed concerns about violent crime in Kampala. The incident follows the death of Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo two months ago, who was falsely accused of theft before being assaulted.
David Owori has died at the age of just 27. One of Uganda's most famous footballers was reportedly murdered after a gang attacked and attempted to rob him. The perpetrators are still at large.
