UCT Jumps 17 Places Back Into Global Top 150
UCT’s joint 147th finish is its best in seven years and lifts South Africa to five universities in the global top 500.
The University of Cape Town reached joint 147th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings released on Wednesday, marking its return to the global top tier after seven years.
Assessing universities across 118 countries and territories, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings expanded from 115 countries in the previous edition, covering nearly 2,300 institutions globally.
South Africa increased its university representation to 17 institutions in this year's rankings, up from 13 in 2026, with five securing positions within the global top 500.
Solidifying its academic leadership across the continent, South Africa remains the only nation in sub-Saharan Africa with universities in both the global top 200 and top 500.
Globally, Oxford retained first place for an 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with Princeton and Stanford Universities tied in third place.
