Two-way tolling on Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel set to start in 2028

Two-way tolling on Sydney Harbour crossings will fund a permanent $60 weekly toll cap, doubling current tolls and benefiting over 680,000 drivers, officials say.

  • Announced on Thursday, the NSW government will charge tolls in both directions on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel from late 2028 to fund a $60 a week toll cap, NSW Transport Minister John Graham said.
  • After months of talks with Transurban since July 2024, the NSW government introduced two-way tolling to make Sydney's system fairer, driven by the cap's expiry on January 1 next year.
  • Based on an average of 105,000 northbound trips a day, current southbound tolls range from $4.41 peak to $3.20 off-peak and $2.67 night, with John Graham saying it means "an approximate doubling of those tolls."
  • Drivers will still have to pay upfront and claim refunds later, with NSW Transport Minister John Graham saying it's necessary to prevent fraud and `As we're making this more permanent, we do have to make sure the scheme is not abused.`
  • The NSW government notes concessions with Transurban including scrapping admin fees from next year, with $211.4 million returned to drivers since January 2024 and over 680,000 claims.
