Two Unseen Monet Paintings to Be Sold in Paris: Auction House
The 1924-25 canvas is the largest in Monet’s Iris series and could set a French auction record, Sotheby’s said.
- Sotheby's unveiled the sale of Claude Monet's "Iris" at its Paris headquarters, valuing the painting at €22 million to €30 million. This represents "the highest estimate ever given for a painting offered at auction in France."
- The painting comes from the private collection of Jeanne Schlumberger , an heir to the Schlumberger oil company who assembled one of France's most important collections of Impressionist and Modern art.
- Executed in 1924-25, the 160cm by 180cm canvas is the largest from Monet's "Iris" series to reach the market. The October 22 sale also includes "Saule Pleureur," valued at €9 million to €12 million.
- Sotheby's senior international specialist Thomas Bompard noted that Jeanne recognized the radical quality of Monet's late works. "She knew when she bought those two extraordinary paintings that these kinds of Monets were not at all fashionable," Bompard says.
- Paris exhibitions "Monet, Painting Time" and "Stories of Landscapes, from Monet to Hockney" commemorate the centenary of Monet's death on December 5, 1926. The collection will tour Hong Kong and New York before the October 22 auction.
