Morikawa Withdraws From Players Championship Due to Back Injury
Morikawa suffered a lower-back muscle spasm on a practice swing and withdrew after one hole, marking the second withdrawal at the richest golf tournament.
- On Thursday, Collin Morikawa withdrew from The Players Championship after one hole at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., due to a lower-back injury suffered on a practice swing at the par-5 11th tee.
- Morikawa had previous back problems dating to 2021 and 2023, including a 2023 withdrawal, and said 'Yeah, I've had this stuff before, and been healthy all throughout the year, been moving weight and pushing, going fast'.
- Entering Thursday as the third favorite, Morikawa had a win at Pebble Beach and a top-five at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week, leading the FedEx Cup early with three top-10 finishes.
- Because he had already started, Morikawa was not replaced in the field and was the second player to withdraw from the tournament.
- With the Masters next month, Morikawa's withdrawal raises concerns about his prep as he seems to believe it’s a muscle spasm, while Rory McIlroy’s back issue from the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week adds uncertainty among top contenders.
