Sabalenka Fights Past Townsend Into US Open Quarters
On Sunday, Aryna Sabalenka defeated American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 at the U.S. Open in New York, advancing to the quarterfinals and staying on track for a third consecutive title.
Seeking a third consecutive title at Flushing Meadows, the 28-year-old Sabalenka overcame early struggles when Townsend broke her three times in the opening games before regaining her rhythm.
Following the victory, Sabalenka said, "I'm happy to be through this really tough opponent," crediting her focus on playing "ball by ball" to turn around the second set.
Sabalenka will next face either reigning Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova or Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk for a place in the semifinals.
The tournament features 10 Americans in the round of 16, the most at any Grand Slam in nearly a quarter-century, reflecting broader American success despite Townsend's exit.
Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, continued her strong race at the US Open and reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament in New York for the sixth time in a row on Sunday.
