SIXT ranked Exmoor third and Brean Down ninth, citing cloud cover, elevation and up to 93.6% solar obscuration for eclipse viewers.
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, a partial solar eclipse will be visible across the UK, with the moon obscuring more than 90% of the Sun from approximately 7pm in the most significant such event in 54 years.
Car rental company SIXT compiled rankings for optimal viewing, placing Exmoor National Park third and Brean Down ninth based on average cloud cover, elevation, and solar obscuration percentages.
Planetarium astronomer Imo Bell advised using ISO-certified eclipse glasses, warning that ordinary sunglasses provide insufficient protection; Bell told the Press Association, "It's important not to miss it, and to be prepared."
The lunar shadow will sweep across Britain at nearly 2,500 miles per hour, taking only 15 minutes to travel from Scotland to Land's End, while Met Office forecasts predict clear skies for much of England and Wales.
Observers will not see comparable solar obscuration again until 2081, while a total solar eclipse visible from the UK will not take place until 2090, making this week's event exceptionally rare.
