Two men arrested after Christmas tree cut down hours after lights switch-on
A 26-year-old man was remanded on suspicion of criminal damage after a memorial tree honoring WWI soldiers was cut down in Shotton Colliery, County Durham.
- On Wednesday, a Christmas tree that had stood for more than 10 years was cut down in Shotton Colliery, County Durham, and two men were arrested in connection.
- Shotton Residents Association chairman Steve Maitland told BBC Radio Tees the tree was a memorial for First World War soldiers and said `This behaviour has no place in our community.`
- Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team said a man is remanded into custody charged with criminal damage, while the second man, 23, was released under investigation.
- Members of the public are making a sleeve for the tree’s base so it can be bolted back up `just to tide us over for Christmas`, Maitland said.
- The tree was felled sometime between 10pm and 11pm on Wednesday, just hours after the Christmas lights switch-on, and police said they will deal with anyone responsible robustly.
