Two arrested over attempted sabotage of German naval vessels
- BERLIN — Two port workers, a 37-year-old Romanian man and a 54-year-old Greek man, were arrested on suspicion of sabotaging German warships at Hamburg harbour in 2025.
- During pre-departure checks on the corvette Emden, sabotage was discovered as it prepared to sail for Kiel, and the prosecutor-general's office said the acts could have caused significant damage if undetected.
- Authorities describe low-tech but damaging methods such as dumping more than 20kg of abrasive gravel into an engine, pouring steel pellets into engine blocks, and deactivating electronic safety switches, removing fuel tank caps, and puncturing fresh-water lines.
- Officers searched and seized evidence from the suspects' homes in Germany, Greece and Romania, Eurojust said.
- Amid heightened fears of Kremlin-backed sabotage, officials have not explicitly linked the Hamburg incident to Russia, though Germany and NATO countries have faced suspected sabotage since 2022 and boosted resilience after an arson earlier this year.
