Twins set to begin important two weeks of in-division games
A 1-5 road trip cut Minnesota’s playoff odds to 4.7%, and 15 straight division games could decide its postseason fate, FanGraphs said.
The 64-70 Twins begin a 15-game American League Central stretch on Friday at Target Field, opening against division-leading Chicago White Sox in a pivotal series.
Following a 1-5 record on their California road trip against the Padres and Athletics, the Twins' playoff odds plummeted from around 40% to 10.5%, per FanGraphs.
Entering the series, the Twins trail the White Sox by more than six games and second-place Cleveland by four games; FanGraphs gives Chicago a 60.4% chance to win the division.
Manager Derek Shelton told reporters Wednesday that "the sense of urgency really needs to come into play," while All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton's status remains uncertain after leaving Tuesday's game with a hip issue.
Despite division challenges, the Twins maintain a path through the final American League wild card berth, where Boston and New York hold the first two spots while the third remains unsettled.
