WATCH LIVES as Turek, Wahls Debate in Iowa Democratic Senate Primary
The candidates clashed over a 2024 immigration bill while agreeing on a $15 minimum wage and a public health care option.
On Tuesday, state Sen. Zach Wahls and state Rep. Josh Turek faced off in their first televised debate, discussing healthcare, the economy, and immigration policy during the hourlong event.
Both candidates agreed on major policy goals, including raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, offering a universal public health insurance option, and reversing cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.
Immigration policy sparked the primary clash, as Wahls criticized Turek for supporting a 2024 bill requiring law enforcement to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling it "the wrong vote."
Turek defended his position, stating the legislation "only applied to individuals that had come here illegally and had already been deported," while highlighting his ability to win in a Republican-leaning district.
Following the event, an Iowa GOP spokesperson alleged "Washington insiders" are influencing the race, while Democratic voters will choose the primary candidate in June to challenge U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson.
