Trump's Iran objective moves from 'surrender' to nuclear deal
Trump now says Iran must agree to a nuclear deal as talks continue and the administration says the goal is to keep Tehran from getting a weapon.
In seven weeks, President Donald Trump's stated objective toward Iran has shifted from "unconditional surrender" to a negotiated nuclear deal, with Trump saying Iran "can't have nuclear weapons."
On March 6, Trump posted on Truth Social that there would be "no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER," a demand Iran's government consistently rejected.
Project Freedom, launched Monday at Trump's direction, involves more than 15,000 American service members in the Strait of Hormuz, where about 20% of the world's oil supply transits.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth insisted Tuesday the president "hasn't capitulated on anything" while describing the goal as ensuring Iran "never has a nuclear weapon" through a deal.
While negotiations remain unresolved as of Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote that "no one will be able to make Muslims surrender," signaling continued Iranian resistance.
