- As of last week, the United Nations awaited delivery of 30 containers holding antibiotics and water treatment kits, while Dr. Valia Rodríguez, a Cuban doctor in Britain, reported her charity's over $500,000 in medical supplies stranded at the Port of Mariel.
- The charity paid more than $6,000 in storage fees for cargo diverted to Panama, while Cuba suffered at least five nationwide blackouts this year as fuel shortages decimated air traffic to the island.
- Francisco Pichón, the U.N. coordinator in Cuba, said sanctions were jamming up the organization's relief effort because shippers feared penalties, though the U.S. government states sanctions do not prohibit food and medical delivery.
