Trump tariffs a mixed bag for US auto industry
- President Donald Trump has claimed a "roaring comeback" in American auto manufacturing following aggressive trade policy, but analysts view the cumulative impact as more mixed. Global Mobility projects US production will reach 10 million vehicles in 2026.
- Tyler Harp, an industry economist at the Center for Automotive Research, cited "a noticeable slowdown" in supplier investment due to tariff policy uncertainty. Investment plunged from more than $8 billion in early 2025 to around $600 million in subsequent quarters.
- Nearly 80 percent of companies rank trade policy changes as their "greatest threat" over the next 12 months, according to MEMA, the Vehicle Suppliers Association. The industry recovered only about half of tariff-related costs, creating "sustained margin drag that is likely to weigh on supplier financials," Deloitte said.
- General Motors plans $4 billion investments in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee, while Toyota committed $3.6 billion to move Tacoma pickup production to Texas from Mexico. The industry is following a "discipline-over-growth playbook," Deloitte said.
- Stephanie Brinley of Mobility Global projects US production rising to around 11.3 million by 2030. Brinley cautioned that "plants aren't put in the ground with the expectation of lasting a presidential cycle," emphasizing long-term operational requirements.
