Trump says men arrested at US air base in UK were looking to do 'big damage'
Counterterrorism officers are examining three suspicious vehicles as about 85 nearby households were evacuated, police said.
- On Sunday, armed police arrested five men near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire after stopping three "suspicious vehicles" in the Whelford area around 12:45 a.m. on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences.
- A local resident called 999 after spotting a "large group of hooded and" men blocking the road, reporting RAF Fairford was already on lockdown due to a "terror threat." Police arrived around 15 minutes later.
- Authorities evacuated about 85 households near the facility and established a 400-metre cordon while bomb disposal teams searched the vans. Aerial footage showed a robot inspecting three white vans with large black barrels scattered nearby.
- President Donald Trump praised British authorities, stating the suspects were "looking to do big damage" and had been under investigation for some time. Trump called the arrests "fantastic" and "an amazing job."
- RAF Fairford houses the headquarters of the 501st Combat Support Wing and hosted US bombers during the US-Israeli war on Iran this year. RAF Lakenheath currently operates under "Charlie" alert, the second-highest threat level used by the U.S. Department of Defense.
