Trump pushes Senate Republicans on ‘No More Changing of Clocks Act’
Trump says ending twice-yearly clock changes would save money, reduce accidents and add evening daylight as the Senate bill remains stalled.
- On Friday, President Donald Trump urged the Senate to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which cleared the House in July with a 308-117 vote. Trump singled out Senator Tom Cotton, accusing him of blocking the bill.
- The House passed the measure aiming to end the twice-yearly clock change observed since the 1960s. Proponents argue the current practice disrupts sleep, increases workplace injuries, and contributes to road accidents.
- In a 385-word Truth Social post, Trump claimed the current process "costs our country a fortune" and is "bad for crime." He argued permanent daylight saving time would boost the economy and improve health.
- Republican Senator John Kennedy told Reuters earlier this week the bill is "dead as disco," noting the Senate has no votes scheduled before the November election. Senator Rick Scott remains confident about future approval.
- Cotton opposes the measure, citing concerns that children would walk to school in darkness during winter. Congress previously repealed a similar 1974 law after public support dropped when the sun rose near 9 a.m.
