Trump issued pardon to former Indiana Rep. Steve Buyer convicted of insider trading
Trump cited Buyer’s military service and 50-plus endorsements in granting the pardon after his 22-month insider-trading sentence.
President Donald Trump granted a full, unconditional pardon to former Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer, citing his service as a judge advocate general in the Army and his tenure in the House from 1993 to 2011.
Buyer served 22 months in prison after his 2023 conviction for insider trading during a $23 billion merger between T-Mobile and Sprint, using confidential information from his consulting work to purchase shares before the deals closed.
More than 52 current and former lawmakers endorsed the pardon, while over 40 former Republicans claimed Buyer was "targeted by the deep state" because of his role in President Bill Clinton's 1998 impeachment trial.
Buyer claimed the pardon "corrects a politically motivated prosecution," calling it "horrific to be imprisoned for a crime that I did not commit." He maintained his innocence throughout.
The pardon draws scrutiny as Trump faces criticism over his own stock trades; Eric Trump, an executive of the Trump Organization, dismissed concerns, stating that financial institutions manage investment decisions.
