Trump names national intelligence director Jay Clayton to lead a new federal AI task force
The panel will report in 120 days on AI risks and opportunities and will coordinate outreach to industry, consumers and public interest groups.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump appointed Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as AI czar to lead the newly formed 'Super Intelligence Force,' tasking him with coordinating federal efforts to maintain U.S. technological dominance.
Trump's announcement follows a late September White House meeting with industry executives, where he promoted rebranding artificial intelligence as 'super intelligence' to ensure the United States maintains global technological leadership.
Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor join Clayton on the task force, which has 120 days to produce a report on AI risks and opportunities.
Industry leaders signed a voluntary safety accord at the White House this week, committing to "four layers of controls and audits" to ensure AI models function as intended, aligning with the administration's preference for self-policing.
While Clayton describes AI as "a national security issue," researchers and lawmakers warn the technology could kill humans within a decade, reflecting tension between the administration's light-touch approach and calls for binding federal guardrails.
