Trump Says He Deserves Peace Prize Ahead of Announcement
- On Oct 7, President Donald Trump stated he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize but acknowledged doubt about his chances, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee announcing the 2026 award recipient on Friday.
- Trump claims he merits the award after wading into eight conflicts since taking office last January, citing a medal he received indirectly from Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in 2025.
- Leaders of Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan claim they nominated Trump, though these assertions remain unverified; other favorites for this year's prize include Pope Leo and the International Criminal Court.
- Parties to conflicts Trump claims to have resolved dispute his diplomatic role, as fighting flares in the Democratic Republic of Congo and along the border between Cambodia and Thailand; Ukraine remains unresolved.
- US-Israel strikes on Iran have led to a seven-month simmering conflict that disrupted global energy supplies, driving up gas prices before the midterm elections and complicating Trump's diplomatic narrative.
