Trump expresses optimism a deal with Iran could be reached soon, but skepticism looms
Trump said talks with Iran have been very good and a deal could come before his trip to China next week, despite Tehran’s rejection of U.S. proposals.
President Donald Trump expressed optimism about reaching a peace deal with Iran before his trip to China next week, where he is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The White House reportedly sent Iran a memorandum proposing a moratorium on uranium enrichment, lifting U.S. sanctions, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz; Trump cancelled 'Project Freedom' less than 48 hours after announcing it to prioritize the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Trump told reporters, "They want to make a deal. We've had very good talks over the last 24 hours and it's very possible that we'll make a deal." The U.S. military disabled an Iranian oil tanker Wednesday for bypassing blockades.
Tehran rejected the initial American proposals but indicated it is still examining the offer; Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said on Thursday, "We expect an agreement sooner rather than later."
Iran's Supreme Leader stated last week the country will not abandon its nuclear and missile capabilities, a position the White House considers a nonstarter for any deal negotiations.
