GOP Senators Renew Calls to Nuke Filibuster After Voter ID Bill Languishes
Republican lawmakers have deprioritized the SAVE America Act amid other legislative matters, disappointing President Donald Trump.
During a congressional recess, Trump and some Republican senators pushed to end the Senate filibuster to help pass the SAVE America Act.
Senators Rand Paul, Mike Lee, Ron Johnson, and Roger Marshall want to eliminate or weaken the 60-vote filibuster threshold to prevent Democrats from doing so if they regain control.
The SAVE America Act would require proof of citizenship for voter registration, limit federal election registration to in-person only, and mandate states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls, but Democrats consider it a voter suppression measure.
