Trump administration reinstates $50 million grant to Minnesota Power
The $50 million award will help Minnesota Power upgrade a 465-mile transmission line from 500 to 900 megawatts.
President Donald Trump's administration reinstated a $50 million federal grant to Minnesota Power on Friday for an HVDC transmission line upgrade, reversing a termination issued last October.
Amid broader cancellations of more than 300 grants totaling nearly $8 billion, federal officials had revoked the funding in early October, labeling it 'Green New Scam funding.'
The $50 million award offsets a more than $900 million upgrade to the 465-mile transmission line linking Hermantown and North Dakota, boosting capacity from 500 to 900 megawatts.
Following an appeal, Minnesota Power worked with congressional delegations from Minnesota and North Dakota to demonstrate the project's necessity, rates compliance administrator Lori Hoyum noted in a March letter.
Ensuring grid reliability and resiliency while mitigating customer costs remains central to the project, Minnesota Power spokesperson Amy Rutledge said Friday.
