Trump administration again suspends UC Berkeley research grants
The suspensions included a restored $1.4 million Lawrence Hall of Science grant and came with little explanation, attorneys said.
In April, the National Science Foundation suspended at least 18 research grants to Berkeley, including a $1.4 million project for Indigenous Ohlone exhibits, despite a federal injunction that had previously restored canceled funding.
The National Science Foundation cited 'foreign funding' concerns when pausing the projects, though grantees received near-zero information, according to attorney Claudia Polsky. These suspensions follow broader federal volatility, including firing of the agency's independent oversight board.
Last June, District Judge Rita Lin issued a preliminary injunction restoring grants previously canceled by the National Science Foundation, EPA, and NEH. Polsky argues the current suspensions may violate that judicial order.
The suspensions immediately halt Berkeley projects and pause grant-funded operations, straining a research enterprise that received $525 million in National Science Foundation grants during the 2024-25 budget year.
On Monday, President James Milliken joined supporters in Sacramento to advocate for a $23 billion state science bond. This legislation aims to provide alternative funding as federal support becomes increasingly unreliable.
