Hawaii’s Big Island lashed by rain and wind as Tropical Storm Lala closes in
The storm is forecast to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane overnight, with the Hilo side possibly seeing up to 20 inches of rain.
The National Hurricane Center expects Tropical Storm Lala to reach hurricane strength as it approaches the Big Island from the southeast this weekend with eye wall winds of 65 mph.
Hawaii has not experienced a landfalling hurricane since 1992, and a direct hit on the Big Island would be the first since 1871, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Vanessa Almanza.
The Big Island is under a Hurricane Warning with 45-70 mph winds and up to 25 inches of rain forecast, while Maui County remains under a Tropical Storm Warning with High Surf Warnings in effect.
Representative Jeanne Kapela urged residents to reach safety before conditions deteriorate, noting many parts of the state are still recovering from devastating March flooding.
The storm is expected to clear the state late Sunday with typical weather returning Monday, though experts note this year's strong El Niño pattern increases Pacific hurricane activity.
