Emotional Scenes as Shark Victim Honoured

More than 100 surfers and community members gathered in a paddle-out to honor Nico Antic, the first shark attack fatality in Sydney Harbour in over 60 years.

  • On Sunday, a paddle-out at North Bondi honoured Nico Antic as more than 100 surfers and paddle-boarders formed a circle, joined by local lifeguards and surf lifesavers.
  • On January 18, Nico was bitten by a suspected bull shark at Nielsen Park, and friends pulled him from the water with critical injuries; almost a week later, his parents announced he died at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick.
  • With splashing, clapping and cheering, community members noted `It was good to see everyone come together as a community and show that everyone cared and showed their support` .
  • Victor Piñeiro, family friend and GoFundMe organiser, has raised more than $270,000 as of Sunday morning, and Lorena and Juan, Nico's parents, said they were heartbroken and thanked Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick and first responders.
  • Nico's death is the first in Sydney Harbour in more than six decades, following four shark attacks and NSW beaches closures amid heavy rains described as a once-in-500-year event.
