Tree Falls on Massachusetts School Playground, Injuring 2 Children, Adult
A second child and an adult were released after the accident, and investigators are examining whether windy conditions helped bring the tree down.
- A student died Monday after a large tree collapsed onto the Winthrop Elementary School playground in Melrose, Massachusetts, which Melrose Public Schools Superintendent Cari Berman and Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis confirmed Tuesday morning.
- The tree originated on the neighboring Phineas Upham House property at 255 Upham St. George, president of the Upham Family Society, said trees were inspected last week and "gave no indication that it was at risk for falling."
- Emergency responders arrived at 162 1st Street shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, where the Melrose Fire Department confirmed three people—two children and one adult—were injured and transported to area hospitals.
- The two survivors have been treated and released from area hospitals. Berman and Grigoraitis announced that counseling staff and administrators are available at the school to help the community navigate the loss.
- Authorities from the Middlesex District Attorney's Office are investigating the collapse, while Melrose School Committee Chair Seamus Kelley canceled Tuesday evening's meeting as the community grieves.
