Trapped Commuters, Motorists Lament As Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Gridlock Worsens
A seven-vehicle crash and bridge repairs left motorists stranded for more than 14 hours, while fares rose to as much as ₦4,000 on some routes.
- On Tuesday, a 40-foot container truck crash at Kara Bridge left motorists stranded for more than 14 hours on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident involved seven vehicles and combined with ongoing expansion joint repairs to paralyze traffic.
- Directed by Minister of Works David Umahi, the Federal Government's two-week rehabilitation project began September 8 to replace deteriorating expansion joints on Kara Bridge, scheduled to run until September 22.
- Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency , Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that a mechanical fault caused the truck to lose control and ram into six other vehicles. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
- Prolonged congestion forced commuters to trek long distances, with transport fares rising to ₦4,000 from Berger to Oshodi. Many road users remained stuck in traffic well into Wednesday morning.
- Frustrated motorists driving against traffic further worsened the bottleneck, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of the Kara-OPIC corridor, which carries heavy volumes of commercial goods and commuters between Lagos and Ogun State.
