Transporters-govt talks set for today
Talks at Governor House aim to end the strike as transporters say 10,000 containers a day are normally cleared from ports.
- On Sunday, representatives of the All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance held crucial negotiations with federal and provincial government officials at the Governor House in Karachi to end the nine-day nationwide wheel-jam strike.
- Goods transporters launched the strike nine days ago protesting what they call unfair taxation and rising operational costs, which they claim caused more than Rs50 billion in economic losses across Pakistan.
- Around 10,000 containers normally leaving ports daily remain stranded across Pakistan, while striking truckers demand the withholding tax on goods transport be reduced to 2pc from the current 7pc rate.
- The government offered relief on other demands, including establishing a dedicated parking facility at Karachi port and providing temporary relief to 10-wheeler trucks regarding upper axle-load limits on highways.
- All Pakistan Goods Transport Ittehad spokesman Muhammad Owais Chaudhry said, "Our first priority is to find a sustainable solution," while officials cite procedural limitations on tax changes through the Finance Bill.
