Lawsuit Filed Against Pittsburgh Children's Hospital for Allegedly Denying Gender-Affirming Care
The complaint alleges UPMC ended gender-affirming care for patients under 19 while continuing treatments for cisgender patients, violating Pennsylvania anti-discrimination laws, advocates say.
- Tuesday, a group of transgender patients and their families filed a sealed complaint with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission against UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, alleging it ceased gender-affirming care for minors. The Women’s Law Project represents five plaintiffs, including three minors and two 18-year-olds.
- On June 30, UPMC ended gender-affirming care for patients under 19 amid pressure from the Trump administration, DOJ subpoenas on July 9, and warnings of criminal prosecution, UPMC said.
- UPMC stopped accepting new transgender patients under 19, tapered prescriptions, canceled surgeries, and refused referrals; plaintiffs say this caused financial burdens and emotional distress for patients with multiple years of prior care.
- The complaint asks the state to investigate UPMC and to issue an injunction forcing reinstatement, while plaintiffs seek reimbursement, damages, attorneys' fees, and may sue if the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission declines action within one year.
- Under Pennsylvania law , gender-affirming care remains legal, and federal courts have temporarily blocked the Trump administration from withholding funds.
