Mahmood Agrees Channel Migrant Intelligence Deal with Belgium

The agreement lets Belgian officers join a northern France intelligence cell and has already helped lead to more than 50 migrant smuggling arrests, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Belgian interior minister Bernard Quintin signed the UK-Belgium Law Enforcement Cooperation Agreement to enhance intelligence sharing and disrupt migrant smuggling networks.
  • Bolstered French police activity around Calais is likely forcing smuggling routes to shift eastward and westward along the coast. Earlier this week, a dinghy traversed 280 miles from Cherbourg to the Hampshire coast, highlighting the changing patterns.
  • The deal removes judicial approval requirements for intelligence sharing, allowing Belgian officers to join the UK-France intelligence cell. Joint enforcement activity has already yielded more than 50 arrests linked to migrant smuggling.
  • "This agreement will help UK and Belgian police tighten the net around the criminal gangs," Mahmood said. The pact could also assist in combating wider organized crime, including drug and firearms smuggling.
  • Belgian interior minister Bernard Quintin emphasized that criminal networks operate across borders, requiring sustained international cooperation to track and prosecute those exploiting human misery through smuggling and drug-related organized crime.
