Trump’s Tariffs Loom over Talks as G20 Meets in US
U.S. tariffs and forced-labor probes are expected to dominate the two-day meeting, with analysts warning the talks may deadlock.
G20 trade ministers open two days of talks Wednesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, amid tensions driven by President Donald Trump's global tariff agenda.
The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on 60 economies since last year, citing concerns over forced labor and excess industrial capacity, straining international ties.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer defended the approach at a Tuesday roundtable in Milwaukee, saying the administration "is not anti-trade" while pushing World Trade Organization reforms.
International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu emphasized Canada's pivot toward diversification, noting non-U.S. trade surged by $33 billion in the past year.
Analysts expect few breakthroughs during the summit, with Atlantic Council expert Josh Lipsky noting trading partners remain wary of agreeing to terms given uncertainty over U.S. trade policy after 2028.
