Nestle Detects Cereulide in Baby Formula Before Recall Across 16 Countries
Nestle detected cereulide toxin in 25 batches of SMA infant formula after new equipment installation, prompting recalls across 16 European countries to prevent health risks, the Food Standards Agency said.
- Nestle, the Swiss food giant, acknowledged it waited days for a health-risk analysis before notifying European authorities and began a precautionary recall across multiple countries.
- Routine end-of-November checks at the Dutch plant found very low levels of cereulide after new equipment was installed, and production was halted with further tests confirming minute quantities in warehouse products.
- Recalled products include SMA Advanced First Infant Milk, follow-on milks and specialised formulas, and the Food Standards Agency urged people to stop using affected products and contact GPs or NHS 111.
- Nestle responded that `nothing indicates any link between these tragic events in these two instances and the consumption of our products` and calls it a `quality issue` amid investigations into the deaths of two babies, French authorities said.
- Tracing operations are under way to identify products from a shared, third-party ingredient supplier, and the Food Standards Agency confirmed the affected ingredient is arachidonic acid oil.
